Abhishek Sinha Has Built An Ed-tech Startup For An Online Finishing School For Law Students

Abhishek Sinha was himself a corporate lawyer for over 15 years and served at the top-most Law firms like Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co, Khaitan & Co, and AZB & Partners. His last stint was with Khaitan & Co lay at the intersection of law and corporate affairs: M&As, joint ventures, investor term sheets, PE contracts, strategic alliances, regulatory compliances, and so on. Almost 60-70 percent of law graduate students in India don't have to go to court daily. Abhishek found flaws in law studies as it was more theoretical and not practical. Hence for the newbies, it became quite tough to adapt to dynamic situations in a corporate set-up.

While asked about the flaw that he funds in-law set-up, he said There’s a huge gap in what students learn in law colleges and what recruiters at law firms expect. Everyone learns contract law in theory, but no one has seen an actual shareholder agreement. Our legal education system doesn’t favor practical applicability. So, commercial knowledge and how the law applies across sectors is very low.”  Hence, he decided to address this issue and came up with the idea of an e-learning platform called NotJustLex. This is what he called a finishing school for law students. He founded this start-up in August 2019. The first certificate course of the course was awarded in April 2020.

Why Students Should Opt For NotJustLex?

NotJustLex is a DPIIT-recognised startup that is built to fill in the gap between theoretical law and practical application. The main reason why this start-up was build so that the students get quality legal learning. On one of his interviews, the owner Abhishek shared his thoughts “Law is not maths, you can’t learn concepts here. Law is where you discuss the context and understand the nuances. You need classes to be live and interactive, and not pre-recorded as most general edtech platforms do. We intend to facilitate a process of collective analysis and learning. It’s a fun way to learn the law.” This start-up has been applauded by various legal practitioners and students. Hopefully, the coming batches of law graduates will produce the best set of lawyers to make sure the legal system in India is well maintained. This success story is worth mentioning as many start-ups come and go but this will remain for decades as it has helped various law students to become a finished product by the time they finish their studies.

The thought process plays a vital role and this is exactly what was going through the founder's mind. The problems that he saw in the system during his 15 years long career, he wanted to ensure that this is a serious issue and should be addressed. This is how this idea was born and today the start-up which is just 18-months old has been doing the rounds in top law schools of India. Various top law colleges in India such as Symbiosis Law College among others have invited Abhishek Sinha to make students understand his start-up and how it will benefit them. This start-up has grown leaps and bounds in just 1 year and the students who have benefitted from his start-up have also garnered positive reviews.
