Supreme Court Stays Defamation Case Proceedings Against Rahul Gandhi

The Supreme Court on Monday temporarily stayed criminal proceedings against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case filed over his comments about Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP.

The case, initiated by BJP worker Navin Jha, stems from statements made by Gandhi that allegedly defamed the ruling party and its leaders. A Special Leave Petition filed by Gandhi challenged the Jharkhand High Court's decision to dismiss his request to quash the defamation proceedings.

Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing Gandhi, argued that criminal defamation complaints must be filed by the aggrieved party and cannot be initiated by proxies. He cited precedents to support the claim.

A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta heard the matter and granted four weeks to the complainant, Navin Jha, and the Jharkhand government to respond to Singhvi’s arguments.

The stay marks a temporary relief for Gandhi, who continues to face legal challenges amidst his political career. This case adds to the broader legal debates surrounding the scope and misuse of defamation laws in India.
