Legend of Ganesh Chaturthi:

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, created Lord Ganesha from sandalwood paste to guard her while she bathed. She then breathed life into the statue and instructed him not to let anyone enter her chambers.

As fate would have it, Lord Shiva, unaware of Ganesha's divine origin, returned to find a young boy barring his way. In his fury, Lord  Shiva severed Lord Ganesha's head in a fit of anger. Goddess Parvati was heartbroken and insisted that Shiva restore their son's life. Full of remorse, Lord Shiva sent his followers to find the head of the first living being they came across. They found an elephant and brought its head to Lord Shiva, who affixed it to Lord Ganesha's body, thus granting him a new life.
