This Female Entrepreneur Is Building A Multi-Core Processor To Enable Businesses To Build High-Performance, Energy-Efficient Systems

With more than 35 years of research and industry experience in computer architecture, parallel computing, data flow computing, and fault-tolerant computing, Ranjani Narayan is a pioneer in technology.

Ranjani was born and raised in Bangalore. Before high school, he studied Canadian and thought he would get the required degree from a local university because that was all he had. But fate still had serious plans.

In the late 1970s, he enrolled in engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and in the late 1980s, he received his doctorate in computer science and automation from the same institute.

During his time at IISc, as a student and staff member, Ranjani worked on the latest technology and later worked on major jobs at MIT, TU-Delft, and HP. In 2006, she founded Morphing Machines with her husband, SK Nandi, a professor of computer science and data science at IISc.

Ranjani explains the painful point behind the initiative.

“The broad topic of my doctoral dissertation was computer architecture and problems related to distributed computing. The main research I did was finding the bending point where we get the most in an ambiguous environment. This is a classic problem that requires a lot of attention. "I also introduced the execution paradigm that was emerging at the time. Database execution is the most natural way to execute a user application," he says.

Surprisingly, the challenges associated with distributed computing remain unchanged even after technological improvisation over the years. The wounded believe the problems have only gotten worse. Today, the need for high-availability systems, support for new applications, the need for reconfigurable processors, secure and secure computing is constantly increasing; the list is endless.

At the end of his tenure at MNC, he had the opportunity to design and build a promising processor using Morphing Machines. Built on IISc, its vision is to redefine high-performance computing. Thus was born REDEFINE, the multi-core processor of the future.

About | MORPHING MACHINES

Make a multi-core processor

Morphing Machines recently joined the government’s SFAL (Fabless Semiconductor Accelerator Laboratory). Karnataka and initiatives of the Indian Society of Electronics and Semiconductors (IESA). Everything is ready to build REDEFINE with 256 cores to meet the IT needs for machine learning/development of AI, IoT, and advanced technologies.

REDEFINE, originally conceived, developed, and implemented in India, is an excellent replacement and upgrade for CPU and GPU by international brands.

Ranjani explains: “It is multiple accelerators and multi-core on-chip system for basic and advanced computing-intensive applications. High-performance computer AI / ML applications and real-time control applications for avionics and autonomous vehicles are candidates for acceleration in REDEFINE. REDEFINE can be configured on domain-specific accelerators (DSA) in key computer aggregates by specializing the execution time. DSA at REDEFINE scale with no problems, no software changes. Several different DSAs have been implemented in the REDEFINE SoC as accelerators defined by the domain-specific software."

She argues that REDEFINE-based solutions offer a unique combination of high performance and flexibility that is not available for other technologies offered by global players. REDEFINE SoCs accelerate whole classes of intensive computing applications with significantly less power

“Unlike other high-performance international processors available on the market, REDEFINE allows post-silicon customization for strategic applications. REDEFINE by design is a secure computing platform created for high availability and initially supports N-modular redundancy for security-critical applications. "REDEFINE is cyber-attack resistant and naturally supports reactive applications using a data-driven operating model," he added.

However, the road was long and difficult. The founders have often thought of giving up and returning to their comfortable jobs.

"But our idea, technology, team, and partners supported us. Our initial discovery was our first customers. Our recent involvement with SFAL has allowed us to move forward.

"Initially, we addressed investors with our high intention of going to the factory, which requires major investments. Most Indian investors openly admit that our technology is destructive and that we can become large and global. However, they appear to be at risk in the semiconductor business, " he said.

Revised scheme

This caused Ranjani and Nandy to return to draw and retrieve their business plan. The revised plan included several ways to generate revenue and interact with potential customers to gain early customer involvement and early return on investment.

The founders are trying to REDUCE the growth of the global market. "What is an inherent processor from concept to implementation will be a moment of pride for us, for Silicon Valley in India, and will mark India (on the world map) as one of the pioneers of processors reconfigurable multi-core, "he said. Ranjani.

They are also part of the QWEIN Qualcomm Group for Women Entrepreneurs, with access to training and mentoring.

At this time, the founders expect to open two options:

Morphing Machines will continue to be an IP design and services company. They will continue to receive customer feedback, improve their products and continue their educational services. REDEFINE-based semiconductor SoCs will also begin production.

Over the next two to three years, they look forward to seeing some of the software's REDEFINE soft and hard IPs that consumers use in real-world situations.

"We retain application development clients to offer an application development package." I would like to receive customer feedback, processor installation, and improvisation. An educational tool will be one of the by-products of this phase. "We will offer universities" educational kits "to enhance next-generation knowledge, offering a comprehensive half-year course that covers all important aspects of multi-core processors - the challenges involved, the solutions to the challenges, and so forth," he adds.
